The wife of a former army chief of the NSCN (IM) was granted bail by the Supreme Court after six years in detention. Wife of Phungthing Shimrang, the appellant was detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), New Delhi, in December 2019 after cash amounting to over Rs 72 lakh was found in her possession. She was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on charges of ‘terror funding,’ and the case subsequently taken up by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). She was detained under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The bail petition was heard by a two-judge Bench comprising of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice N Kotiswar Singh. The judges factored in the appellant’s gender and her long period of detention as grounds for her release on bail. Her initial bail petition at the Delhi High Court was dismissed.
