Brushing aside skeptics and criticism, the Hornbill Ball and the Hornbill Fashion Show is set to become a regular feature of the festival. Last year the theme for the fashion show was ‘Aid for Leh Flashflood Victims and Hornbill Preservation’, a noble theme indeed, yet one is left to wonder how far did this ‘noble thought’ reach.
Speaking to the Morung Express exclusively, Himato Zhimomi IFS, Commissioner and Secretary for Art & Culture and Tourism said that last year they could raise a little over ten lakhs which was given to the Prime Ministers Relief Fund towards aid for Leh Flash Flood Victims. Unfortunately the fund raised was not enough to cover ‘Hornbill Preservation’ however the Bureaucrat expressed satisfaction at the fund raised last year, stating that anyhow the Forest Department are doing their bid towards Hornbill Preservation. Apart from some awareness campaigns on ‘Hornbill Preservation’, the fund raised from the Ball could not do much in this regard.
Reacting to criticisms about the price for the ticket to the Hornbill Ball (Rs. 5000/- Admit two), Zhimomi stated that the price for the tickets to the Ball have been slashed by 50% this year. Adding that the Ball is not only about glamour, Zhimomi said that since it features Indigenous Musical Plays it is also a promotion of our culture. This year the funds raised will go towards Orphanages in Nagaland, one only hope that the funds raised this year will be enough to make an impact!
