‘Bank could be an agent of change’

Kohima, June 7 (DIPR): The State Level Banker’s Committee meeting was held at Hotel Japfu Kohima on June 7. AGM, SBI, RBO, Dimapur, A.K. Das chaired the meeting. At the outset A.K. Das welcomed the Chief Secretary of Nagaland, Lalthara IAS, Bank officials and senior State Government officials and also gave an overview of the performances of Bank during 2010-11.
Chief Secretary, Lalthara IAS while giving the opening remarks said that the bank could be an agent of change. Citing the example of 2011 census of Nagaland, which was recorded as 19, 80, 602 on 1st March 2011 thereby a decrease of 9434 persons from the population of 2001, he said that it shows a beginning of a positive change. He further said that everyone knew that 2001 census was incorrect but did not know how to rectify it and appreciated 2011 census as successful and said that the correct data was entered due to mobilization of the people from the grass root level.

Emphasising on social changes, he said that banking sector is one where a lot of things can be done. The society requires changes in attitudes and also needs to create sense of social responsibilities. “To change the attitude of the people we need to create public awareness” he said. He further said that loan recovery is very poor and is becoming a hindrance to development. People taking loan from individuals felt that they have to repay it but when it comes to bank loans people think otherwise, which he felt needs to change.
He reiterated on importance of banking services by engaging BCs in every village having populations of over 2000 to save the people from the clutches of individual money lender, where people pay high interest. He also said that mobile banking, internet banking are available however many people are not aware of those facilities and felt the awareness should be created.
Agenda discussed during the meeting were Adoption of the minutes of last SLBC meeting held on 15-03-2011; Action points emerged in the last meeting and action taken thereon; Development in Banking Operation in the State; Review of performance under Annual Credit Plan (ACP) 2010-2011; Adoption of Annual Credit Plan (ACP) 2011-2012; Review of performance under Government Sponsored Schemes and KCC, GCC and SHG; Review of progress- (a) Providing Banking Services by engaging Business Correspondents (BC) in every villages having population over 2000 (b) Opening of bank branches in unbanked blocks; Allotment of land for setting up of RSETIs; Progress under Committee on Financial Sector Plan (CFSP); Recovery performance of Banks; Infrastructure support for essential services like electricity, telephone services, road connectivity and security of Banks and Agriculture and allied sectors.
