Barak FC today emerged as champions of the 23rd Classic Cup 2017 after edging New Market XI by a solitary goal in the final match here at the Kohima Local Ground.
With this, Barak FC claimed its fourth successive Classic Cup title having previously won in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
The winning goal for Barak FC came early on in the 4th minute when Mayoshing Khongriwa found the back of the net.
A red-card in the 85th minute for Barak FC midfielder Seiboi Haokip gave a glimmer of hope for New Market XI, but Barak FC held on as they defended against a persistent New Market attack who made numerous attempts.
Barak FC received cash prize of Rs. 1,50, 000 along with trophy and citation while runner-up New Market XI were awarded with Rs. 80,000 along with trophy and citation.
Six individual winners received Rs. 7000 each while the player of the tournament pocketed Rs. 10,000.
Altogether, 35 teams joined the 23rd edition of the tournament. Theis tournament was organized by Classic Club Kohima under the theme “Creating a better world through football.”
Earlier, Rev. Fr. Neisalhou Carolus, Vicar General, Diocese of Kohima in his address as the chief guest made a fervent appeal to the youngsters to emulate the good example set by the members of the Classic Club and carry forward their good deeds and mission set before us. He told the youngsters to maintain hard work, commitment, determination and persistent to achieve any great things in life.
