Commemoration of the Battle of Kohima by 3 (Naga Hills) Assam Rifles unit of Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) commenced here this morning at the 2nd World War Cemetery. It will go on till July 10.
The inaugural function started with remembering the soldiers who had given supreme sacrifice for the defence of Kohima.
Maj Gen MS Jaswal, YSM, SM, IGAR (N), Brig M S Bains, SC, YSM, SM, Cdr 5 Sector Assam Rifles and Col Jagdeep Bhogal, SM,Comdt 3 (Naga Hills) Bn Assam Rifles laid the wreath to recognize the sacrifice of soldiers with the motto“ We Don’t Know Them All But We Owe Them All”.
The Battalion displayed historical artifacts of the World War II, particularly the weapons captured from Japanese forces during the War alongwith other items on the occasion.
94-year-old war veteran Meaken Soba (No 32605 Ex Subedar of 3 (NH) Assam Rifles), who fought the Battle of Kohima voluntarily joined the event to relive his 39 years of association with the Battalion as well as the location of the battle (present day Kohima War Cemetery).
He was felicitated by Maj Gen MS Jaswal, YSM, SM, IGAR (N) and Rovilato Mor, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Kohima.
The event was graced by civil dignitaries as well as local populace and media personnel along with Assam Rifles officials.
