‘Be an agent of change in society’

Kiphire, June 27 (MExN): The Kiphire District Users Network (KDUN), Survivors and International Border Area Peoples’ Welfare Organization (IBAPWO) observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on the theme ‘Listen First.’ The programme was organized by KDUN and CBO Survivors which was sponsored and supported by IBAPWO and DAPCU.  

Dr. Holiba A. Anar as chief guest speaking on the theme stressed that ‘there are two ways of listening, of which listening to ones inner thought is the first step to change. A small step can make a big change in us and the society at large.’ He continued saying that ‘one should not blame others for what we are; we should learn to accept ourselves and others. “Let’s all be a change and be an agent of change in our society,” he concluded.  

From the law enforcing agency, Khuzah Jurry, SDPO of Kiphire district as special guest shared briefly on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985. He shared on different sections of NDPS Act especially that are relevant to the district. He also emphasized on the drug abuse and illicit trafficking as an international issue. He continued saying that “drug is a crime but one should not feel rejected and it is never too late for a change”.  

The programme was followed by a short speech from Tsiatsivi, District Program Officer. She also shared on the Golden Triangle of trafficking and vulnerability as the district is bordering Myanmar. She advised all the drug users to access the present facilities available in the district. “Drug addiction is a disease, it affects an individual wellbeing, family and the society, therefore lets support and go forward hand in hand for a change in our society,” she added.  

The programme was chaired by OST counselor Zesela and welcome address was given by Zelise (CBO). Presentation of ‘Intervention of drug abuse and present scenario in Kiphire District’ was done by H. Matthew Chawang, Program Manager, IBAPWO.  

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from the KDUN and benediction.
