hakhesang Hoho Kohima (CHK) president Theja Therieh today exhorted the 55th general session- cum- freshers social of the Kohima Chakhesang Students’ Union (KCSU) here at APO Hall.

Speaking on the occasion, he wanted to see the students to have a vision and focus to be independent and have a secured income.

“Do we have a stable economy to prove ourselves as a self sustained society? Where does our revenue come from? At present, we are surviving from the grants given by the Central government,” he said.

He said that their (students) pride and self esteem should be strong so as not to give in to easy money or earn fast bucks by degrading their moral and ethical values.

“You cannot build a Utopian world and live in it but you should be practical and pragmatic in your approach,” he said.

“We are fragmented by tribalism. Our allegiance to the community seems to be more important than to the state. The wrong policy of Government providing jobs and public distributions through tribal lines has polarised the tribal communities to a large extend making our social harmony and integrity secondary to community interest,” he said.

He said the present sub-classification of the already classified ‘Backward Tribe’ is against the law and roster chart must be done away. The policy can be reviewed to create creamy layer and drive the policy towards the targeted sections.

He said Backward Region grants and border area funds must be extended on population proportions and address the specific pockets earmarked for the purpose to achieve the ideals of the programme and policy. Selection of Backward Regions must be based on authentic yardsticks by a competent committee. The divisions cannot be drawn on tribal or community lines but geographical and administrative divisions. This will not only address the issue but reduce tribal polarizations.

He also called upon the young students present to pledge themselves not to be bribed but to exercise one's franchise to elect good and accountable leaders.

“We all must involve in clean election by starting with purification of electoral roll and processes of election. We can do it, if we have a desire to live a good life under a good government,” he said.

Therieh said we must exert our voices and shout at the top of our voices and act in obedience, believing that God will do the rest. If we all force our way ahead, straight and not turning left or right, the victory is ours. We can overpower this society and install a new society of our choice, the choice is ours.

Stating that many are critical about mushrooming of organizations in Nagaland, he however considered this as reactions to the situations prevailing today.

“Everybody wants their voices to be heard. This is a sign of social awakening and it calls for change and unless we allow change to happen, this social unrest will continue. That change must begin from you and me. We must pledge ourselves to change and commit to change the society in which we live. We have learned so many things wrongly, and unless we learn to unlearn those wrongs, our society will never progress,” he said.

He also challenged the students to walk the miles to face the challenges and proved to the world 'I can do and I will do it'.

“There is no substitute to hard work, only those who walk tirelessly will achieve. The world is unfriendly and competitive; we are in that world of 'survival of the fittest'. It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can manage change. Let us manage change with skills and knowledge and do it smartly. We must look forward and take our society forward, he said.

We must dream big and make those dreams a reality. Let us move out of these comfort zone and change ourselves and change our ailing society…We have swim against the current to bring a change. Change, be the Change and change the world to live in a better world,’ he said.
