'Be result oriented' urges Gov of Nagaland

Governor of Nagaland, P.B. Acharya who graced inaugural session of the 9th Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC-IX) at SASRD, Medziphema on Thursday encouraged organizers to be result oriented while inquiring into the results of the earlier symposiums conducted.  

“What are the results and outcomes of the last symposium? It should be followed up, it is time to wake up and work for the society,” he said.  

Acharya said that the researches done by the scholars should not be to merely earn titles and the works should not be kept in the cold storage but utilized. He was of the view that such programmes should envisage to understand the plight of the farmers and provide strong linkages for buyers and sellers.

  In this regard, Acharya also underscored about the vibrant role that agricultural universities could play since they are directly or indirectly responsible for the plight of the farmers.  

“The knowledge gained from universities should be reflected in the life of the masses,” he added.   The Governor expressed optimism that the 9th Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops would be a beginning to understand the constraints of the farmers and solve the problems.  

Presenting an overview of the Symposium, Dr. C.S. Maiti, Organizing Secretary, SYMSAC –IX said that the outcomes of the Symposium would be the first draft recommendation for the road map in respect to spice production and spice industry for the northeast which would be forwarded to the Director General, ICAR for further needful towards the development of spice industry in the region.  

He informed that 90 professionals/researchers/academicians from across the country and 100 progressive spice growers, 16 industrial personalities, 30 exhibitors and 40 numbers of suppliers of spices and spices products have been registered till the first day of the event.  

The Symposium is being held under the theme, “Spices for doubling farmer’s income” and will culminate on March 17.  

Nagaland University, Vice Chancellor, Prof Pardeshi Lal who was the guest of honour called for joining hands to make a difference and to go for quality crops.

  A host of renowned researchers, scientists including farmers are attending the 3-day event.  

Mention maybe made here that Thejamo Ovung from Wokha district got the Best Farmer Award from Nagaland for Spice (Ginger) from Indian Society for Spices.
