Dignitaries and others during Legal awareness programme on Consumer Protection Act on June 11

Kohima, June 13 (MExN): The Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Phek in collaboration with Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) has conducted a legal awareness programme on Consumer Protection Act, 2019 with Government Higher Secondary School Pfutsero on June 11 last.
In keynote address, Shiekhozo, Asst Controller, LM&CP, Phek highlighted that the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 marks a new era in safeguarding consumer rights in India.
With the inclusion of digital marketing and commerce in the Act, consumers are empowered against unfair trade practices, he said.
Speaking as the guest speaker, Mezivolu T Therieh, District & Sessions Judge cum Chairperson of PDLSA emphasized that the law is enacted to protect the interests of consumers in India by establishing authorities for timely and effective administration and settlement of consumer disputes.
She stated that the Act modernises consumer protection by including: digital commerce, strict penalties for misleading ads, influencers/celebrities’ endorsement liability, Central Consumer Protection Authority, product liability and ease of redressal where consumer resides or works, online complaints e-daakhil portal, and mediation.
She urged the students and teachers to be smart consumers and insist on bills and receipts, check expiry dates and quality while purchasing goods and availing services.
She said that one can claim compensation for: defective product, deficiency in service and unsafe goods.
She also said one can file physical complaint before the District or State or National Consumer Protection Commission or online complaints through the e-Daakhil portal or take help of consumer helpline 1915 or consumerhelpline.gov.in and also shared about the pecuniary jurisdiction and role of mediation as Alternative Dispute resolution in consumer cases.
The interactive session was led by Sekhotso Rokha, panel lawyer, PDLSA addressing the questions raised.
The programme was chaired by Vezhohu Kezo, Vice Principal while welcome address was delivered by Vechikhoyi Lohe, Principal GHSS Pfutsero.
