Bhanu Jayanti observed in Dimapur & Kohima

Dimapur, July 13 (MExN): The Gorkha Students' Union Dimapur (GSUD) celebrated Gorkha festival Bhanu Jayanti, the 207th Birth Anniversary of Adikavi  Bhanu Bhakta Acharya on July 13 at Nepali Basti.

Bhanu Jayanti is an annually celebrated Gorkha cultural festival in remembrance of Bhanubhakta Acharya, who is termed as ‘Father of Nepali Language’, GSUD informed in a press release on Tuesday.

Understanding the importance of SOPs issued by the government during the pandemic, the festival was observed with strict compliance to the safety measures. Only the Gorkha students' Union Dimapur and few selected Gorkha leaders along with winners of online competition were present during the programme, the release added. 

The function was graced by the Founder Chairman of DGU Kumar Subba and State Executive Member BJP Nagaland as the special guest and Bishnu Bhattacharjee, President of NPF Minority Wing Nagaland State as the special invitee, along with few Gorkha leaders from Dimapur Town.

During the award ceremony at the event, Jacob Sundas was recognized as the first Gorkha to open delivery service during COVID-19 pandemic in the field of humanity work.

Anjana Limbu, Nagaland state badminton player and Hem Chettri, Nagaland cricket player were awarded in the field of sports. The Chronicles Band were awarded in the field of music

Online art and dance competition winners Jiwan Rai, Gorkha journalist from NLTV also received the award.

Academic students with good marks award were also given during the event.

Meanwhile, in Kohima, the Gorkha community observed the 207th Birth Anniversary of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya in the presence of office bearers of Gorkha Public Panchayat and its subordinate bodies including an online event under the aegis of Gorkha Sahitya Kala Sanstha Kohima (GSKSK) at GPPK Hall, Chandmari.

Speaking on the occasion, President of GPPK Santu Thapa recollected the different works of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya and said that the translation of the great epic Ramayana in Nepali language is considered as one of his great work as a poet.

Thapa said that as Acharya devoted his entire life for the upliftment of the community. The GPPK president also spoke on the COVID pandemic and asked everyone to strictly follow the laid down SoPs and maintain COVID appropriate behavior while also requesting everyone to get vaccinated.

He also stressed on creating awareness on the third wave of COVID-19 within the community so that people will be more serious and responsible in safe guarding the community.

Chaired by GSKSK Vice President Ganga Thapa, the programme commenced with lighting a lamp on the portrait of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, while Bala Khawash shared the life sketch of Acharya and vote of thanks was tendered by GSKSK general secretary Susila Limbu.
