Newmai News Network Aizawl | November 11 New Land Use Policy (NLUP) Implementing Board Chairman and Champhai ‘S’ assembly constituency MLA JH Rothuama today commissioned the Kelkang water supply scheme which is said to be the biggest solar pumping project in India. The launching programme which was held at Kelkang village community hall was witnessed by PHE Minister Zodintluanga. Speaking at the inaugural function, JH Rothuama expressed gratitude to the people of Kelkang village for their hospitality in serving outsiders at the time of gospel revival at the village. He said that Kelkang village received the blessing of God due to their hospitality at the time of spiritual revival. He said that the state government has assisted the village through its flagship programme NLUP by constructing water tanks, toilet and distributing dustbins and measure is also being taken to provide the village better water supply for especially hosting large number of guest. He said that the companies engaged in Kelkang water supply scheme believe that this project is the biggest solar pumping project in India and even in the whole of Asia. He asked the locals of Kelkang to treat the project as their treasure and maintained it properly as it will be the source of their socio-economic development. PHE minister Zodintluanga who present on the occasion also congratulated the people of Kelkang village for receiving such blessing from God and expressed happiness for the fact that PHE department has been utilized by God for a channel of blessing for the people. He said that the project could be materialized due to the initiatives taken by NLUP Implementing Board and PHE department and the assistance received from NABARD. Constructed with Rs 631 lakh funded by NABARD, Kelkang Water Supply Scheme was started in December 2015 and the project has been completed in seven months against the targeted 18 months. The water supply scheme will harness solar power to pump water from Bangla stream where a dam with a capacity to store 20,000 litres of water has been constructed. From the dam, water would be pumped to main reservoir at Kelkang built at 520 metres high. The pump is powered by 204 solar plates. It is designed to supply water to 2000 people. It is expected to pump 82,000 litres of water per day throughout the year.
