Bio-informatics center in the offing

Kohima, Nov 3 (MExN): Nagaland University Vice Chancellor, Prof. K.Kannan today stated that  plans are afoot to create a Bio-informatics centre in Kohima, saying that children would be taught on this so that they can find out the wealth they have. 

Addressing a State-level science exhibition today at Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima on the theme, “Science and technology for sustainable development,” he informed that he is coordinating with the higher technology department to do bio-diversity mapping of Nagaland, so that students can go for field visits and identify plants, so that a database is created.

Mentioning that the science colleges are being upgraded and that the government has promised to supply 20 telescopes, he also informed that some teachers would be sent to Raman Institute in Bangalore to gain knowledge in sky mapping. 

Earlier, Dr.Gagan Gupta, Reader in Physics and coordinator National Level Science Exhibition, NCERT New Delhi attended the occasion as the guest of honour.

Altogether, 82 participants from 18 schools representing 5 districts - Kohima, Dimapur, Tuensang, Wokha and Mokokchung took part in the exhibition.

In the exhibition, the 1st prize went to Arunang G.Thomas, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Kohima, who presented a model on self-reliance.

Saneinuo and Matholenuo from Mezhür Higher Secondary School, Kohima won the 2nd position for their model on uses of biomass to generate electricity, while the third position went to Ayangla of Mezhür Higher Secondary School, Kohima for a solar power water pump model. The winners will represent the state at the Birla Industrial Technological Museum, BITM, Kolkata.
