Blanket ban on hunting, booze & drugs in Suruhuto-Asuto area

In a move towards wildlife conservation and substance control, a joint meeting of Village Council Chairmen and Gaon Burahs (GBs) from across the Suruhuto-Asuto area of Zunheboto district was held at Suruhuto Town on July 17. The meeting, initiated by the Deputy Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, S Toiho Yeptho, was attended by representatives from 32 villages and 3 towns under the 33 Suruhuto-Asuto Assembly Constituency.

During the meeting, the participants unanimously adopted a set of resolutions aimed at protecting wildlife and banning the sale and use of illicit substances within the constituency.

According to the communiqué issued by the office of the Deputy Speaker, the first resolution calls for a “complete blanket ban on all forms of hunting or fishing throughout 33 Suruhuto Asuto Assembly Constituency.” 

In order to ensure effective implementation of the conservation measures, the second resolution announced the formation of a dedicated action body named the “Wildlife Protection Committee, Suruhuto Asuto Area.” The committee will be tasked with formulating necessary modalities, rules, and processes for the enforcement of the resolutions and the protection of wildlife, flora, and fauna across the area.

The meeting also adopted strong measures to curb the availability and use of narcotics and alcohol. As per the fourth resolution, there will be a “complete blanket ban on sale, purchase, transport, possession and use of any illicit drugs and narcotic substance in all the villages and town of 33 Suruhuto Asuto Assembly Constituency.”

The fifth resolution imposed a “complete ban on sale of alcohol from all the villages and towns of 33 Suruhuto Asuto Assembly Constituency.”
