Blood connects us all: More observe World Blood Donor Day

Dimapur, June 16 (MExN): District Aids Prevention Control Unit (DAPCU) in Mon, Tuensang, and Wokha observed World Blood Donor Day under the theme ‘Blood connects us all’ on June 14.    

Mon: In Mon, the programme was observed in collaboration with Shansham Organization and District Hospital Mon at Chapel Hall, District Hospital Mon, sponsored by Nagaland State Blood Transfusion Council and Project Axshya.  

A press release informed that Mongnyei, Supervisor, DAPCU, Mon emphasized on creating a platform to disseminate information on the importance of blood donors to make available sufficient blood for the patients.  

In his motivational speech, Loipang, a blood donor, stated donating blood and saving life is a noble missionary work and appealed to the gathering to donate blood voluntarily leaving aside their fears and doubts. Meanwhile, blood recipient Kenlong shared on how she struggled to get blood in the hospital, and was finally saved by voluntary blood donor.  

Presenting a PowerPoint on Blood Science, Dr. Ngampa MO, PMR urged the participants to be motivated from the speeches of the donor and recipient. He also briefed on the basic facts of blood, eligible criteria for donors, post donation advice, benefit for blood donors and counseling for reactive donors.  

To mark the occasion, Mon Voluntary Blood Donor Association (MVBDA) was also formally launched by Dr. Wungyong, i/c Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Mon (DHM). He encouraged the association to do their best to increase its members through awareness campaign to the general masses. Assuring to extend help and guidance to the association, Dr. Wungyong further urged the members to approach the DHM for any queries. He was also optimistic that after the launch of MVBDA, no patient in Mon will die for want of blood.  

MVBDA will be headed by Tongmeth Nekong as President, C. Nahnyei as Secretary, and Joseph Chipa as Coordinator.    

Wokha: The programme held at Wokha was organized in collaboration with Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital Blood Bank.  

Speaking on the theme, Deputy CMO/DACO Wokha stressed on the relationship between donors and patients. She thanked the local donors who have saved many lives, while citing the example of a local grandmother who donated blood.  

Dr. Seyie, MO I/C Blood Bank presented a PowerPoint on the basic facts of blood donation, eligible criteria, benefits, pre and post procedure for donors.  

Lichumo, DPO, DAPCU spoke on the scenario of Blood Bank, Wokha. He showed the target versus achievement graph, where the target of 200 units was exceeded by 47 units of blood. He also pointed out the challenges like non availability of blood storage, myth and misconception and non existence of Donors Club.  

Altogether 90 persons, including District Administration officials, students, and doctors, participated in the programme.  

Tuensang: Tuensang district observed the World Blood Donor Day at Gabriel Chapel. Attended by the youth of Tuensang Town, the programme had Dr. Tochi Chang, Medical Officer, Blood Bank, District Hospital Tuensang as resource person.  

Dr. Tochi informed that as per a survey, requirement of blood donation in Tuensang district is very high, but voluntary blood donation is still low. In this regard, he emphasized on the need of more youth involvement and sensitization activities. Awareness on voluntary blood donation at various levels, he added, needs to be encouraged in order to provide quality blood to the people. Dr. Tochi also acknowledged the blood donors and Gabriel Ministry for their active participation in saving lives and encouraged the members to continue the good work and motivate more people for the good cause.  

The programme concluded with voluntary blood donation and selection of new committee members for the VBDA.
