Blood donation phobia shows downward trend in Nagaland

The phobia of blood donation in Nagaland is showing a downward trend with the increase in numbers of people voluntarily coming forward to donate blood.

This was clearly evident as several students including some bureaucrat come forward to donate their blood during the observation of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day here today under the theme “Giving blood regularly.”

Commissioner & secretary works and housing Temjen Toy took the lead in donating the blood and later encouraged others to come forward and donate blood.

Temjen Toy said there was misconception among the people as many think that donating blood is sacrificing part of life. He stressed on the need to overcome from such misconception and realize the importance of blood donation.

For receivers, it is a gift of life, he added.

Expressing his readiness to join Voluntary Blood Donors Association, he also asked others to join it so that “we can be help to others.”

Voluntary Blood Donors Association consultant Alipoker asserted that blood donation is a new concept in Nagaland. However, in the recent years, people are coming up for the cause of blood donation.

With 30/40 members, Alipoker said the Association want to help people and they are doing voluntary to help people who are need of blood.

The Association plans to go to schools/colleges and move forward, and to ensure the state sees no shortage of blood.

In this, he challenged the people to come forward and join the blood donation to suffice the shortage of blood.

On the absence of sufficient blood in hospitals, Alipoker stressed on the need to do away with the shortage of blood and he said this can be possible when people come forward and donate blood.

Formation of All Nagaland Voluntary Blood Donors Association is on the pipeline.

Earlier, the significance of the day was highlighted by Menukhol John, commissioner & secretary, health and family welfare while Lhuvesho (7 times donor) shared his experienced as a blood donor. OFF band presented a special song while the programme was compere by Neingulie Nakhro. 

Distribution of prizes for slogan competition was also done during the function. Japfu Christian College, Baptist College and Model Christian College were declared as first, second and third respectively.

Vote of was proposed by Khriebu Nakhro, president, N-Naga DAO. The function was followed by voluntary blood donation.
