Hoto Yeptho, Director of Land Resources department, Nagaland today released a book on ‘Rubber plantation in Nagaland- the socio-economic aspect’ here at Hotel Ura. It was written by Dr. M. Temjen Longkumer and published by Nagaland Institute of Development Studies (NIDS), Dimapur.

The whole idea behind the book is that there was once a strong wave of rubber plantation in Nagaland, especially when the rubber price shot up to Rs.200 plus per kg during the year 2011.

“At that point of time, I just felt that somebody should do a proper research on rubber plantation especially for the Naga farmers,” said Longkumer, adding the book was thus an outcome of a systematic research study.

It can be used as authentic source of material for policy makers, rubber farmers and academicians.

Some of the important issues discussed in the book are reasons behind the starting of rubber plantation by farmers, challenges faced by rubber farmers, rubber board and government involvement in rubber plantation, training programme, tapping and harvesting of rubber, facilities in the farm, earning and income from rubber. It also includes rubber market including why it is down, message to the upcoming rubber entrepreneurs and workers, interview with rubber board, weekly tapping, present trends and status of rubber which includes a discussion of Nagaland situation, world production and consumption, Indian production and market.

Year wise rubber price in India as per Rubber Board since 2001 – 2015 and monthly wise for 2016-17 are also given in order to highlight the market trend.

The service was led by Dr. Visakhono Hibo, principal, Japfü Christian College, while Temjenmongba Sempo, pastor, Kohima Ao Baptist Church pronounced dedicatory prayer.
