Border tension resurfaces in Wokha

Dimapur, February 20 (MExN): Tension is said to have surfaced in the Lio-Longidang and Longtssiri village areas under Champang EAC at the Assam-Nagaland border. A water-pumping project is informed to be in full progress, undertaken by the Assam Government, on the banks of Tsuli River. The river is said to be within the area of Longtssiri village and the land for the project was encroached upon by the Assam government.

According to Kohima Lotha lower Range Union, the water-pump project works commenced just this month and high-power pumping machines meant for water-supply and irrigation are being set in place. The water is for ‘immigrants’ who have forcefully occupied the said villages’ land, the students informed. A note received here from the union appealed to the Nagaland government to intervene and defuse the situation. The union said that the project by the government of Assam has sparked tensions in the area. Cautioning that things may go out of hand, the students’ organization warned that failure on the part of the government would attract an own course of action from the public as a defensive measure.
