Guwahati, September 10 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Thursday announced that legendary British virtual band Gorillaz will perform in Guwahati on January 31, 2027, as part of the group’s first-ever tour of India.
Taking to social media, Sarma said Guwahati has been selected as one of the host cities for the landmark India tour and expressed excitement over welcoming the band as well as music fans from across the country.
“Delighted to announce that the legendary Gorillaz will perform in Guwahati on January 31, 2027, as part of their first ever India tour,” Sarma said.
He added that Guwahati was “proud to be among the host cities” for the tour and said the city was looking forward to hosting both the band and fans travelling to Assam for the performance.
The announcement marks a major development for Assam’s entertainment and cultural landscape, with an internationally recognised act set to perform in the state.
The concert is also expected to draw visitors from different parts of India, potentially giving a boost to the city’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
Gorillaz, known for their distinctive blend of alternative rock, hip-hop, electronic music and pop, have developed a global following since their formation in the late 1990s.
The band is the brainchild of musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett and is recognised for its animated members and multimedia-driven performances.
The Guwahati show will form part of the band's maiden India tour, bringing the group’s music and visual spectacle to Indian audiences.
Sarma also tagged the official Gorillaz account while announcing the concert, underlining the significance of the event for the state.
The announcement comes as Guwahati continues to emerge as a venue for major cultural and entertainment events, strengthening its position as a prominent destination in the Northeast.
With the January 31 performance, Assam is set to host one of the most prominent international music acts to visit the region, while fans from across the country will have an opportunity to experience Gorillaz live in Guwahati.
The event is expected to generate considerable interest among music enthusiasts in Assam and beyond, in the coming months.
