Imphal, February 12 (NNN): Armed miscreants allegedly opened fire around 10 rounds of gunshots at the residence of vice president and spokesperson of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Hareshwar Goswami in Imphal on February 11 night.
No casualty occurred in the firing at the residence at Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak under Porompat police station of Imphal East district, reports said on Sunday.
After the attack, family members found 10 empty cases including seven for 9mm ammunition from the gate early Sunday morning. A team of Porompat police station inspected the residence after being informed by the family members. A case against unidentified miscreants has been registered and initiated an investigation, a police source said.
Leaders of MPCC including its president K Meghachandra, former chief minister O Ibobi Singh and others also paid a visit at the residence of Hareshwar Goswami on Sunday morning. The MPCC strongly condemned the attack terming it as an act of cowardice.
Talking to reporters at the residence of the MPCC vice president, Ibobi said the recent series of violent incidents targeting the Congress party left a big question mark whether democracy exists in the country, particularly in Manipur.
Ibobi insisted that the law enforcing agencies, particularly the police, should take the incidents of attacking the party office and members seriously and investigate properly to nab the perpetrators.
