Tuensang, November 28 (MExN): A Burmese Rock Python (Python Bivittatus) was released into the wild by the Department of Environment Forests & Climate Change at Longra village under Tuensang district on November 28.

According to Suman W M Sivachar IFS, Wildlife Warden, Kiphire Wildlife Division, a Burmese Rock Python had strayed into the paddy fields of the village on November 27. Kiphire Wildlife Division was intimated of the matter by Zupeni Tsanglai IFS, DFO Tuensang on the same evening, since Tuensang district comes under its jurisdiction for wildlife related matters.

“After assessing that the health of the python was good, it was released back by the Division in to the forest nearby the village safely in the presence of Sangbo, Forest Guard, Tuensang Forest Division and Longra Village Council members in the morning of November 28,” Sivachar stated. 

Longra village and surrounding villages like Noksen and Litem are located near Dikhu River. Pythons are normally present in such areas of Tuensang.

The Department has thanked the Longra Village Council and villagers for extending their cooperation in the release of the reptile back into the wild and for their active involvement towards conservation.
