Burning down of reserved forest condemned

DIMAPUR, APRIL 10 (MExN): The Joie De Vivre (JDV) Phek strongly condemned the action of some unknown person(s) who allegedly burned down Khabor Reserved Forest belonging to Phek Village during the last week of March.

The Phek Village with a view to preserve wildlife and to promote and maintain ecological balance of all the neighboring villages had passed a resolution in its Annual Council Meeting a couple of years back. Hence, the implementing process was successfully taken up for the past years banning all kind of cultivation system, besides, all types of hunting, viz; using gun, catapult, trapping etc.

Kuzhovesa Soho, President Joie De Vivre, Phek in a press communiqué stated that the Forest which covers  approximately  50 (fifty) hectares  is only ½ (half) kilometers away from the village and is a boundary Reserved Forest of Lozaphuhu village. Within these few years of reserving the said forest, live species started settling down; apart from those wild species all the neighboring villages began to receive a good atmosphere and indeed a healthy living of the villagers were being impacted  from the said green forest, the JDV stated.

However, shockingly and surprisingly all those existing development were being put to in vain. The JDV strongly condemned the action of the unidentified culprits involved in destroying the entire forest. The JDV further likened the actions of the unidentified culprits to that of  extortionist, murderers, 'which are barbaric and unbearable.'

The JDV on behalf of the village urged the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) to set an enquiry into the incidents and take its own course of action as per the resolution of the organisation as was done to the several culprits earlier. Failing to interfere into the incidents it may effect the co-operation of the CPO with the village in the near future, the JDV stated.

The JDV further urged the CPO and the district administration to ask the NSCN (IM) cadres to vacate their camp in the said forest who have camped there for the last several weeks, so that necessary re-plantation may be carried out in the said forest. The JDV further appealed to all the Village Councils within its jurisdiction to voice against the incidents as per the CPO Resolution so as to avoid such unwanted incidents in the near future.
