BYC members plant trees in Balijan (A) locality in the week-long celebration of Van Mahotsava or Forest Day on July 8.
Balijan, July 8 (MExN): Balijan Youth Club (BYC) observed Forest Day, also known as ‘Van Mahotsava’ or festival of trees, at Balijan (A) under Bokajan sub-division, Karbi Anglong, Assam on July 8.
During a short meeting cum public awareness campaign, Shyam Roy, Sports Secretary, BYC stated that Van Mahotsava was first initiated in 1950 by KM Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food with a view to impart enthusiasm among masses towards forest conservation and planting trees, a release stated.
Adding that Van Mahotsava is a week-long festival of trees celebrated in different parts of India from July 1 to July 7, Roy pointed out that the main objective is to spread awareness among the masses about the benefit of planting trees in all the localities.
“Van Mahotsav or forest day is a beautiful initiative to save the environment to which we owe a lot,” he said. Pointing that tulsi has huge medicinal properties, he lamented that its plantation has declined. He therefore encouraged the gathering to take initiative in planting the plant.
