On International Domestic Workers’ Day, the domestic workers continued their appeal to the State Government to register their organization as a Trade Union and recognize their rights.

The International Domestic Workers’ Day under the theme, ‘Uniting for Domestic Workers’ Rights’ was organized by National Domestic Workers’ Movement – Nagaland Region in collaboration with Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) at Assisi Auditorium, Lakeview Colony Dimapur.   Addressing the gathering as the Speaker, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dimapur and Secretary DDLSA, Ajongba Imchen said that the domestic workers were a group of people who needed utmost protection from the authority and support from the public. He expressed surprise as to why the state government has still not recognized the rights of the domestic workers. “Domestic workers are the most important people contributing to the raise of our economy because without them officers and leaders would not be able to attend offices. Domestic workers do most of the household chores thereby enabling officers to attend their jobs in offices,” he added. Ajongba stressed on the urgent need for the government to recognize the rights of domestic workers since all were equal before the Constitution. “What is the difficulty in recognizing their rights?” he queried and added that not recognizing the rights of domestic workers was also another form of corruption.

He assured full support of the DLSA towards the cause of domestic workers and encouraged them to have hope. The Speaker informed that DLSA provides free legal services to those persons whose annual income was less than Rs 1 lakh. He said that not even a single case related to domestic workers has been reported to the CJM office during the last one and half year and encouraged the domestic workers to come forth with their problems.

Guest of Honour, Rev. Sr. Mary CJ, Provincial Superior, UFC NE Province also acknowledged the contributions of domestic workers towards the growth of economy. She expressed the hope that the state government would soon recognize the rights of the domestic workers.
