Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Mrs. Hushili inaugurated the office of the Dimapur District Citizens’ Forum (DDCF), formed in 2010 to promote peaceful co-existence among various communities living in Dimapur, here at Naga Shopping on Thursday.
The DC in her address said that “Dimapur is not just a little piece of Nagaland but a mini India” populated by people belonging to various communities and religions. Hushili said that the priority of DDCF should be to build and foster harmony and peace among different communities and also to preserve the “ancestral heritage” of the city.
“We must all chip in so that people from all walks of life can thrive peacefully in Dimapur,” the DC said and added that it is not only the police and administration but also the citizens who should take the lead in trying to bring about positive change of a place or city.
DDCF President Hokiye Yepthomi in his keynote address highlighted the main objectives of DDCF and said that the forum will strive to uphold, protect and preserve the historical heritage, age-old values and identity of Dimapur district. Hokiye also said that DDCF will develop and promote high sense of responsibility, mutual respect and tolerance amongst the tribes and communities living together for generations in Dimapur. DDCF President also assured to extend need based support, solidarity and co-operation among communities and tribes in times of natural calamities, crisis, riots and distress.
Former Chief Minister KL Chishi, MLA, who also addressed the function said that Dimapur, once a “rejected and dejected place” has now become a thriving and attractive place with people from all over India and different districts of Nagaland coming together to form a cosmopolitan city.
Chishi said that it was unfortunate that Dimapur has also become a “bone of contention” among certain sections of people and that there are some who are attempting to change the name of Dimapur itself.
Advising against any attempt to change or alter the history or cosmopolitan nature of the city, the Congress legislator said every citizen living in Dimapur should consider himself or herself as a “Dimapurian” first before naming his community or tribe.
DDCF vice president Y Kikon chaired the inaugural programme, which was also attended by another Congress MLA, K Hollohon. Representatives of various organizations and bodies including Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Naga Council Dimapur attended the programme.
