Call to exempt delimitation in Nagaland

NEW DELHI, AUG 23 (MExN): The Associate Members of the Delimitation Commission from Nagaland today attended a meeting of the Central Delimitation Commission at New Delhi. This was conveyed through a press communiqué issued by Nagaland Home Minister Thenucho. The members who attended the meeting included Thenucho, Home Minister, Khekiho Zhimomi, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Nyeiwang Konyak, Parliamentary Secretary, Tiameren, MLA, Chuba Chang, MLA and Wangyuh Konyak, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. Besides TN Mannen, State Election Commissioner, and ex-officio Member of the Delegation Commission, and Lalthara, Chief Electoral Officer were also present at the meeting.

The delegation from Nagaland apprised the Delimitation Commission of the collective stand taken by the Associate Members, the State Legislative Assembly, all Political Parties in the State, and the State Cabinet, that Nagaland should be exempted from the current delimitation exercises. Unreliable census figures, which were already rejected by the State Cabinet, the ongoing peace talks, and the need to maintain peace and equilibrium amongst the various tribes of the State, were some of the grounds cited by the delegation for seeking deferment of the delimitation exercise.

They also met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and explained to him the stand of the State while urging him to take the initiative in amending the Delimitation Act, 2002, so as to exempt Nagaland from its purview. The delegation is planning to meet the Prime Minister and the Union Law minister tomorrow.
