Call to help students with special needs

KOHIMA, JUNE 3 (MExN): Over the years, St Joseph School in Chandmari, Kohima has nurtured students with special needs and helped them succeed in their academics. In 2011, Ruokuowheto Rupero, with visual impairment and Kumilimo Apon with locomotor disability became the first two ‘special students’ from the school to clear their HSLC exams. In 2012, Albert Loitongban, with speech impairment achieved the same feat. In the recently concluded HSLC examinations, Lishenthung Odyuo, who has ‘learning disability’, cleared the exams with flying colors.

ENABLE, Kohima in a press note offered its gratitude to the school for their efforts to help students with special needs. The note stated that Lishenthung Odyou received support from the staff of the school along with Special Educator from Bumble Bee Inclusive Centre, Kopele Mero; Clinical Psychologist, Themmungla from the state mental health institute and other well wishers. It also informed that he received support from the Nagaland Board of School Education.

The organization, which aims to empower persons with disabilities, lauded the headmistress of St Joseph School, Kohima, Nzanbeni Tsopoe for giving hope to many parents “who have concern for their children in mainstream schools.” It further expressed hope that other schools would take cue from them and open doors to students with special needs and help them “in whatever way.”
