‘Call for women’s active role in sanitation’

Kohima | October 11 : Expounding on the importance of women role in sanitation approach, Minister for PHED Dr. Ngangshi K. Ao today appealed the women bodies to actively involve in the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) and work with missionary zeal. Speaking at the WWSO PHED sponsored Orientation programme on TSC for women bodies in the TSC districts at Hotel Japfu, the minister hoped that such programme will enrich and educate the women bodies and enable them to carry out the sanitation campaign with activeness.
He said that construction of toilet in schools, angawadi centres and public places were among the many activities taken up by the department under total sanitation campaign. He also stated that with the end of monsoon, the department will carry out a lot of activities to ensure that people adopt a good sanitary and hygienic system. The minister also released a WSSO’s publication entitled “Good sanitary practices.”
Also speaking on the occasion PHED secretary Zhaleo Rio, IAS, urged the women folk to take the lead role in sanitation. He said that to ensure good sanitary practices, it has to start from home, then to neighbor and the like. “You have a great role to play,” he said and requested the women bodies to put a concerted effort in making Nagaland a cleaner and healthier place to live in. Through the total sanitation campaign, the minister said the department is targeting to achieve 100% open defecation free by 2013 in Nagaland. In this, he called for the participation of each and every individual to make it happen. On the other hand, the minister regretted that the lack of awareness on sanitation in the rural areas and he stressed on the need pass proper information to all section of the people.
Rio also wishes women to become ambassador and missionary for spreading the gospel of sanitation in the state. Er.Kevisekho Kruse, director, Water & Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO), Public Health Engineering Department highlighted the objective of the programme. He said only five states in India - Kerala, Sikkim, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra is doing well in Sanitation; others have a long way to go. Only 25000 villages have been declared as ‘Nirmal Grams’ - Clean and sanitized villages out of 6 lakh villages in the country , which speaks volumes of where the country is !
“Even after self rule for over 65 years, sanitation situation in our country is a sorry state of affairs” he said.Adding  that even people rich people and so called educated people urinates in the street corners.
He said Total Sanitation Campaign is basically a campaign programme and It has mainly to do with mindset change and behavioral change. He said all possible efforts to be made to make good use of important events in the State like Republic Day, Independence day, Gandhi Jayanti, Beauty Pageants, Festivals, Wrestling competition, Jubilee programmes, etc for propagating TSC messages to the masses through sponsorship, advertisement, etc.
The Department also organized activities like Essay competition, Audio-Visual shows, sending out Sanitation resource persons to various programmes of other departments, etc, besides the normal display of posters, roadside hoardings, IEC literature distribution, expo trips within and outside the State, campaign through media , Rallies , etc, will continue to be further reinforced.
The resources persons for orientation programme included Er.Agwaseng Kent, EE. WSSO.PHED, Adi Nakhro, IEC Consultant, WSSO.PHED, Imsubenla Ozukum, Consultant WSSO.PHED and Atoi Hessso, DEO, PHED. A film on “Zero Waste Management” was also screened by Atoi Hesso, DEO,PHED.
The inaugural function was chaired by Er.Mhondamo Ovung, Chief Engineer PHED , while vote of thanks was expressed by Er. K.G. Sumi, Additional Chief Engineer,  PHED.
