Kohima, April 22 (MExN): The Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN), representing the laity of the Kohima Diocese, has expressed profound sorrow at the death of Pope Francis on April 21.
In a press release, CAN President Johnny Ruangmei described Pope Francis as “a beacon of hope, compassion, and love for the 21st century,” whose work “touched many lives profoundly.”
The Pope has returned to His eternal home, but the love he radiated will remain an anchor of healing for humanity in times of despair, it said.
The Catholic community members of the Kohima Diocese, along with Rt. Rev. Bishop James Thoppil, also commended His soul into the infinite mercy of the Holy Trinity - God the Father Almighty, Jesus Christ His Son, and the Holy Spirit.
As a mark of respect, CAN has called upon all faithful in the Kohima Diocese to join in the following prayer on the day of Pope Francis’ funeral: “Eternal rest grant unto Papa Francis, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon him, and may his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
The statement also invoked prayers for the College of Cardinals, asking for “wisdom and courage” as they begin their sacred duty of electing Pope Francis’ successor.
