Implementation of state cabinet decision on cancellation of non function/defunct cooperative societies has initiated various steps for stringent cancellation.
This was stated in the annual administrative report of the cooperation department 2013-014 tabled in the just concluded assembly session here.
The report said that in the Ist phase, 604 registered but non-functioning cooperative societies from across 11 districts are proposed to be cancelled. Modalities and legal formalities are being worked on.
“This significant programme will weed out thousands of non-functioning registered cooperative societies and usher in a new generation of cooperatives aiding the state economy,” the report said.
According to the report, there are 7000 cooperative societies of which the highest number from Dimapur district having 1734 and lowest from Longleng district with 67.
The Draft Nagaland Cooperative Act has been vetted by the law department and preparations are on to lay it during the next assembly session.
This proposed Act will replace the old Assam Cooperative Act 1949 & Rules 1953, which is still enforced in Nagaland, the report said adding “Adoption of our own Cooperative Act will usher in new ways of propagate cooperative movement in the state suitable to our own local needs and complexities,” stated the report.
