Capacity building prog in apiculture for New Kigwema and Mitelephe villages held

Kohima, March 18 (MExN): The Kohima Forest Division in collaboration with Nagaland Bee Keeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) organised a one day capacity building in apiculture for New Kigwema village and Mitelephe Village at the Council Hall of New Kigwema village on March 17. 

In the technical session, resource person, Neilazonuo Terhuja, member NBHM gave a general introduction on bee keeping, species of bees, their importance and scope. She highlighted on apiary Management techniques such as apiary establishments, site selection and tools and equipments. In addition, she explained the importance of crop pollination, which plays a crucial role in not only enabling the creation of fruits and seeds but also in supporting various ecosystems. 

Speaking as a resource person, MhathungTsopoe, member NBHM, spoke on swarming of the bees and its control, upkeep and care of bee hives. He also highlighted on process of establishment of Colony Division.

The resource persons also demonstrated on various types of bee equipment such as bee veil, smoker, queen cage, comb foundation sheet etc. Additionally, the various uses of honey, its benefits, techniques of honey collection were highlighted to the participants. The importance of maintaining proper hygiene in the process of honey collection was also explained. 

While welcoming all the participants, Dr Sevono Seletsu, DFO Kohima, encouraged all the participants to gain from the training and clear their doubts so that the villages can become successful local bee keeping communities. 

Altogether, 30 participants from New Kigwema and Mitelephe villages took part in the training.

The training was organised for Livelihood beneficiaries and CCA members of New Kigwema village (Batch - I) and Mitelephe Village (Batch-II) under Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalayas Nagaland Project.
