Capital College of Higher Edu celebrates cultural day

Kohima, September 13 (MExN): Director of Art & Culture, Government of Nagaland, Vevo Sapu stated, “culture plays an important role not only in promotion of economic growth, but also in sustaining the physical environment, preserving family values, protecting civil institutions in the society.”  

Sapu was addressing the gathering of 2nd cultural day 2016 of the Capital College of Higher Education (CCHE) as the guest speaker today here at the State Academy Hall, Kohima.  

Tribal identification by means of facial markings has lost its validity, especially in the presence of moves to detribalize people and strive for national unity, asserted Sapu and added that rich linguistic diversity is a precious asset and its reduction will diminish the reservoir of knowledge and tools for creative thinking and communication.  

Expressing its resentment over the fast disappearance of many languages, Sapu suggested that grammars, lexicons, texts and recordings be prepared before it took final collapsed. Sharing views on present context, he said, due to availability and easy access to factory produced goods, traditional essential items made from bamboo have almost been replaced in all homes.  

He said that the Art & Culture Department while observing and realizing the need of the above stated aspect, has come out with the intent to revive the traditional knowledge of basketry by organizing workshops for school children in all the districts. With an intention of creating interest and passing on those knowledge and skills amongst the younger generation, workshops and training programme will be introduced into the educational curricular, Museum activity, youth camps and so forth, maintained Sapu.  

Observing the 2nd Cultural Day 2016 under the theme, “Blending into the Roots” folk songs, fusion shows, play, skit drama, cultural dances, wrestling exhibition, demonstration of traditional games, western tune are some of the highlights of the day observation event.  

Tatongkala Lemtur Lohe invoked God’s blessing, Dr. Z. Venuh, Vice Principal delivered welcome note, Eastern Naga Students and Ratolu and co presented folk song, a play on Ao Naga Folkflore was presented by Ao students, Kuthosheyi Vero, Social & Cultural Secretary Students’ council of CCHE tendered words of gratitude and Zhopithilu, President, EU pronounce a closing prayer.  

Meanwhile, all the major tribes of Nagaland presented their own cultural presentation by showcasing their rich and aged-old cultural and traditional practices. Cultural feast was provided to the entire students, guests, invitees and faculty staffs.
