Commemoration of Captain (Late) Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, MVC, Memorial Day took place at Phezha under Kohima district on June 28. 

Paying respect to martyr, Maj Gen Vikas Lakhera, SM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (North), Brigadier Herjinder Singh, Commander, 5 Sector AR, Colonel Manjeet Singh Kooner, VSM, Colonel (Operations & Coordination), Headquarters 5 Sect AR and Neisalie Kenguruse, father of Captain Kenguruse laid the wreaths which was followed by lighting of torch “Amar Jyoti” at Capt Kenguruse War Memorial, Phezha.

Maj Nitin Sharma led the function and read out brief history of Captain late Kenguruse who hailed from Nerhema village, and was awarded Maha Vir Chakra posthumously following his “unmatched courage and supreme sacrifice in the face of the enemy” during the Kargil War that took place between May-July 1999 along the line of control (LOC).

To mark the event, a tree plantation drive was also organized which saw plantation of saplings by Major General Vikas Lakhera, Inspector General  AR (North), Vibha Lakhera, Neisalie Kenguruse and Denuo Kenguruse. Various school children were also invited to witness the event. A Pipe Band display was organised by AR for the students and public. To reach out to the maximum villagers, a medical camp was organised during the event. In addition to this, for the local Ex Servicemen, a Grievance Cell as well as a CSD extension counter were established at the location. The event also witnessed distribution of essential medicines to the Ex Servicemen and locals. To encourage local youth for Assam Rifles Technical & Tradesman recruitment into a registration drive was undertaken at the camp.

“Even in the modern era, sons of Nagaland have proved their mettle against formidable odds. One of the warriors of this great land was Captain (Late) N Kengruse, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous). He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra posthumously for his unmatched courage and supreme sacrifice in the face of the enemy during the Kargil War, in true traditions of the Indian Army. The award of ‘Maha Vir Chakra’ to Captain N Kengureuse, has epitomised his bravery and made him a legend,” AR stated. `
