The weeklong Captain N Kenguruse, MVC Memorial football tournament organised by Red Shield Division in collaboration with Kigwema Students’ Union (KSU) began today at Jakhama Local ground, Kohima.
Delivering a speech, OIC 5/9GR, Major Suraj Rana commended late Captain N Kenguruse Mahavir Chakra, who demonstrated remarkable gallantry and bravery during the Kargil war in 1999 and laid his life for the country. Major Rana said the motive the Indian Army, under the Red Shield Division in Jakhama have behind organizing the football tournament in the region was to honour the valour of the Naga Warrior so that it will have a lasting legacy for future generations in the surrounding villages.
He also said that there are many advantages of the game which instills certain values like communication, leadership, and time management skills for the players. He encouraged the youth to recognize both individual strength and collective efforts.
Major Rana further expressed acknowledgement to all the teams participating and called them to pay homage to the brave Naga soldier and foster stronger bonds through the showcased talent of the youth.
Neiselie Kenguruse, father of Late Kenguruse MVC thanked the organizers for organizing such an event to honour his late son. In the past 25 years, late Kengurüse’s father said it has been encouraging that many activities, in his son’s honour has been organised. He said it was uplifting for the family.
Speaking about the teams, Neiselie Kenguruse expressed that it was a way of fostering and building friendships through the tournament. He said although not every team would emerge victorious, it was the joy in everyone coming together to play and the father conveyed his happiness at the unity and shared experiences created through this event.
The inaugural program included lighting of the lamp by the family of Captain N Kenguruse along with the army officials followed by cultural performance.
During the weeklong edition, 11 teams are participating at the event. On the first days of the match, Phesama youth organisation team defeated 21st Millenium FC with 7-2 goals and during the 2nd match between Kingsman FC Tsiesema and Kigwema, the match ended with a tie break. Kingsman FC Tsiesema won through penalty by 4-1 goals.
