Our planet earth crust is composed of 20% organic and 80% inorganic materials and the study of ceramic technology or engineering is the study, research, development and manufacturing from that 80% inorganic non metallic materials like ceramic kitchenware and tables, insulators and potters, building materials like tiles, cement, glasses and bullet proof glasses, refractors, composite materials, enamels, electronic ancillary, microprocessor and solar panels, jet engines, glass light bulbs, cars, bio-medical implants, fibre optics, nuclear fuel, uranium oxide pellets, missile nose cones etc..

Career Prospects

There are vast career opportunities for those with a degree in Ceramic Engineering or Technology in both private and public sectors. It could be as entrepreneur or employee in large- scale ceramic manufacturing units, cement industry, silicon carbide industry, steel refractor industry etc or as stated above in the product manufacturing of non-metallic inorganic materials, one can also get jobs in Indian Space Research Organisation, Defence metallurgical Research Laboratory, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Institute of Plasma Research Centre among others where there is great need for trained expert in ceramic. Highly demanding specialization is for the Electronic Sector for manufacturing integrated circuits, sensors, fibre optics and solar panels etc.

How to become a Ceramic Technologist or Ceramic Engineer?

To be eligible for bachelor’s degree course i.e., BE or B Tech, one must clear the 12th std Board Exam in Science Stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects and clear AIEEE and complete 4 (four) years degree course.
