The Konyak community of Dimapur celebrated ‘Aoleang Monyu’, the spring festival of the Konyak Nagas here DDSC Stadium on Tuesday with traditional fervour and gaiety, with Minister for RD & REPA, CL John, as chief guest, and Parliamentary Secretary for Economics & Statistics, Tovihoto Ayemi, as guest of honour.
Addressing the festive gathering, the minister said with advent of Christianity, celebration of traditional festivals too should undergo a shift and that they should be celebrated in right perspectives and in line with concepts of the new religion.
CL John said while celebrating festivals, one should do away with excessive indulgent in either food or drinks and focus more on preservation and promotion of one’s rich culture and heritage. He also discouraged donations in the name of festivals.
The guest of honour said Nagaland is blessed with rich culture and heritage and vibrant tribes, which can be showcased to the outside world. Greeting the Konyak community on the occasion, Tovihoto said like the spring festival (Aoleang), every individual and Nagas as a whole should also strive to sprout new ideas and plans. He also said Dimapur being the ‘Face of Nagaland’, all people, irrespective of community or religions should learn how to co-exist in harmony. Cultural troupes from various Konyak ranges presented traditional songs and dances. The event culminated with a grand community feast.
