Since its inception in 2003, the Governor’s Award till date has conferred 85 outstanding persons in the field of Arts, Music and Literature in Nagaland. This year, five persons were conferred the commendation in the 19th edition of the Governor’s Award in the field of Arts, Music and Literature 2021 & 2022 at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima on September 27, 2022. The Governor of Nagaland, Prof Jagdish Mukhi feted the deserving personalities including Wapang Ozukum for Arts (2021), Sunep Lemtur for Music (2021), Zangzang Zeliang for Music (2021), Bethel Tsuzu for Music (2022) and Tali Angh for Music (2022).
With the statement, “performing arts is a powerful medium for public education,” the Governor has asserted that arts and music is more than just amusement or leisure activities. His message has come at a time when a good number of the Naga people, especially the younger generations, are investing their life, time, talent and wealth to pursue a serious professional career in the field of performing arts.
Relating the skill of arts, music and literature with the purpose to educate the population on the values of truth, tolerance and harmony, and as a powerful medium for public education, particularly for creating awareness to eradicate social evils and to impart information about welfare schemes, the Governor’s message has added considerable admiration towards these fields.
During times like now, when enormous attention and discourse is around the issue of conserving and promoting the rich Naga cultural history and the Naga traditional folk arts, the Governor’s Award in the field of Arts, Music and Literature has hopefully established and elevated the passion for many to continue their artistic pursuits without any apprehension.
With the right exposure and publicity such as the Governor’s Award, arts, music and literature which have always been central to the Naga people’s existence will persist to add distinctiveness and richness of the Naga community and its legacy.
