Censored Democracy

Yudang Ao

The fate that lies between when you give up your right hand while you nurture the impel of your leftist sight blinded by a few chosen men deciding the liberty of what is basically yours. There is an equation to how politics can change the perception of leadership and the void that faces us especially the Ao people. The voice that is being spread and felt amongst Ao community about the lack of leadership or quality men who should lead especially in bureaucracy is spoken with honesty and the future looks like a dark circle void of colour. Ask of me to choose one Ao leader standing up in current state politics, and I laugh satirically – Self satirical laughter to be precise because I am laughing at the cause of my own future and the generations I will bear. There is none.

Blame it on ourselves because we created a system that is murderous to constitutional rights, to liberty, in fact to life itself rhetorically. We created the ‘Senso’ candidature. This is why good men have died in our society, this is why we create jealousy amongst villages between sons and daughters of the six mystic stone brothers and hate to admit, it branches out into the tree that nurtures tribalism. If there is one Ao man out there who would disagree with me that we are all not racist then kindly stop reading and break bread with your ‘khanja’. Analysis is based on your own judgment but this is why we do not have good leaders and will never produce any. The greed, the enticing factor of being powerful, the egoistic nature of just so my clan or my village has produced this many Ministers blah and blah. No one holds the right to tell me that I cannot do what is constitutionally mine and rightfully given to me, not even the village council or the ‘senso mundangs’ or whatever mundane associations and unions that are out there. Understand that when you choose a leader (lousy or biliously) this person not only represents your little village but a constituency, a range, then a town, then an entire race and finally the citizens of an entire state. Abraham Lincoln must be crying right now.

Let’s say you have chosen to field a leader and your media musings of how dynamic, helper of the poor and saviour of the downtrodden leadership that you see in that person. Sorry I don’t see it and neither do the others apart from your village. The question to our mysterious misery would be, I haven’t seen your self proclaimed leader’s mandate but again whose mandate is it anyways. I am guessing the ‘Senso’s’ but I haven’t heard or seen any. I must have been blind. “Eureka” This is the solution or wait blindness cannot be a solution – Our blindness to how this is affecting a small society like ours- How can that be the solution? Martin Luther would have said, I have a dream; that one day an Ao man from Ungma would stand up and say that we should all follow this leader from Longkhum Village, or from Merangkong because of the quantity of the word MAN I find in him or her. Or at the least my interpretation of Luther’s famous speech would be that.

Then comes the quality of Ao men or those who wants to be kings, powerful and a fancy imported automobile. I am sorry I still haven’t seen even one mandate spoken about by anyone in the Ao region. All I heard was how one became rich for a day just because he holds nine household votes. I heard of a candidature whose track record says that he bullied his way into business by thrashing traders and now wants to stand for elections and say I am going to change society. I can see a definite change but I apologize because I am still blind. And since I am still blind, I don’t see those existing educated high position officers pushing retirement just so that the Village council wants him to build a subway system from his village to Dimapur. This is now and the future looks say discouraging in a milder tone. God save the Queen.

Of course, it is what society has brought upon us, a society of uneducated people (if one understand the true meaning of being educated), greedy and hopeful traumatised pioneers as how we are marketed. The ones who do this ‘Senso’ candidature should be ashamed and so should you and me. The basic foundation of Democracy is laid from what our forefathers practiced in our villages centuries ago. The selection process of representations to lead a village or community for governance. This representative governance through civilizations built the word DEMOCRACY through centuries amongst communities white, black and yellow across the globe. This is what the current world is fighting to instil yet we go back full circle and kill it. The funny part is if I do not support what the ‘Senso’ says it then I will be kicked out of my village and become an outcast in my own land. Imagine my own land which has the blood of my forefathers running through every stream and earth. I cry murder yet I become the criminal. How proud you must know that you are killing Democracy. This election, I am not going to vote because I do not find one single candidate good enough to lead my constituency. One day in the future, if ever a day comes when we can transfer vote like France does then maybe I will vote. Other than that I don’t see any genuine leader stepping up because of the censorship of the Senso. But again who votes in Nagaland anyways.
