A skill development programme for inmates was launched in the Central Jail, Dimapur on November 14. The programme was launched under the aegis of the Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
Director General of Prisons, Home Guards & Civil Defence I Toshitsungba Aier inaugurated the project in the jail premises.
It will be run in collaboration with Aadit System Pvt Ltd, a Kanpur-based training provider working in the area of software development & maintenance, corporate trainings, LED light manufacturing, consulting and training for vocational & skill development.
For a start, the training will comprise electronics repair— TV and LED bulb. According to the Jailor, Dr Oben Yanthan, around 60 inmates will comprise the first batch of trainees. Even under-trials can sign up for the programme. The Jailor added that the target will be to upgrade the programme to manufacturing of LED bulbs.
The training duration will be three months and inmates completing the course will be awarded certificates, which will be equivalent to certificates issued by vocational training institutes.
DG Aier said that the concept of jails as a punishment facility is today passé and shifted to transforming into correctional facilities. “This is not your permanent house. One day, you will get released. This training programme is to skill you and enable you to make a living when you go out,” he said.
He encouraged the inmates to take the training seriously, absorbing the lessons imparted and “use it when you leave here.”
