Central team to make assessment of drought situation in Nagaland

Kohima, April 22 (MExN): The Inter-Ministerial Central Team on their visit to Kohima district had a briefing with District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and line departments at DC's Office Kohima on April 22. 

According to a DIPR report, the team was led by Director CWC Sudhir Kumar, Under Secretary Food and PD, Krishi Bhawan, Ram Chandra, Assistant Director, MNCF/DA, FW, Dr Pradeep Kumar.

During the briefing, the central team said the purpose of their visit was for assessment of drought situation in Nagaland. The team requested the Agri and PHE department to develop an action plan prior to the monsoon and reoccurrence of drought like situation in Kohima district to assist the farmers in the cultivation in case of delayed or no rain which would affect the cultivated plots and ultimately resulted to lose of economy for the farmers. 

It also requested the department to assist sustainable resource of water throughout the year not only in Kohima town but to rural people as well. The Department of Animal Husbandry was requested to have preparedness in case of drought and epidemic situations in the state.

DDMA Kohima highlighted on drought like situations in the state and drought mitigation measures undertaken during 2021. Measures to mitigate water scarcity in Kohima town undertaken by PHED, Urban Division Kohima were highlighted.

1465.4 acre of agricultural crops affected in Kohima 
DDMA highlighted on the 1465.4 acre of agricultural crops affected by drought situation during the 2020-2021 in Kohima district where 65 villages mostly from northern areas were reported to be affected. The officials from the departments of Agriculture, Fisheries, PHE, RD, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Land Resource attended the meeting.

After the briefing, the team along with DDMA officials and line departments visited the drought hit site at Gariphema village, Kohima for spot verification. It was informed that 30-40 household at the village were affected by the drought.

Peren: An IMCT led by Adviser, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Ruchika Gupta along with Under Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Deep Shikhar Singhal, and Research Officer, Sansad Marg, Dr Md Faisal Abdullah visited Peren district on April 22. 

A brief meeting was held at Jalukie with administrative officers and various Heads of Departments to take stock of the drought-like situation in the district. 

Department of Agriculture, PHED, and Fisheries through a presentation apprised the visiting officials of the ground realities that the department has faced during the drought-like situation in the district. The team conducted field inspections at Mhainamtsi, New Jalukie, and Nkwareu Village. 

Wokha: Group-3 IMCT along with VSDMA officials visited Wokha district on April 21 for assessment of drought situation in the district. The Deputy Commissioner, Wokha & DDMA Chairman, Orenthung Lotha chaired the meeting held with the DDMA members.

District Agriculture Officer, Wokha highlighted the drought situations in Wokha district through PowerPoint presentation. Various lines departments and Ralan villagers also interacted with the IMCT team. IMCT team, Wokha DC and DDNA members visited New Wokha Village and interacted with the villagers.
