The central government has enhanced the Nagaland state’s quota of Notary Publics from 200 to 400.

This was stated in the official Gazette issued by Ministry of Law & Justice (Department of Legal Affairs), Government of India.

It was signed by Additional Secretary (Legal Affairs), Ashutosh Mishra on October 17, 2025 in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 15 of the Notaries Act, 1952 ( 53 of 1952.

In Notaries (Amendment) Rules, 2025, it stated that the same shall come into force on the date of the publication in Official Gazette on October 17, 2025.

Under the revised Schedule to the Notaries Rules, Nagaland’s quota has been increased from “200” to “400.” Similar enhancements were made for Gujarat (2,900 to 6,000), Tamil Nadu (2,500 to 3,500), and Rajasthan (2,000 to 3,000).

Mentionably, for Nagaland, the development follows after Y. Kikheto Sema during his tenure as principal secretary for Law and Justice of Nagaland met Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in New Delhi during October 2024 and April 2025.

Sema made a plea for enhancement in the quota of Notary Publics in Nagaland from the current 200 to 400 under Rule 8(4A) of the Notaries Rules, 1956.
