Mokokchung | October 21
The indefinite ‘chakha bandh’ called by the Mokokchung District Commercial Vehicles Owners Association (MDCVOA) came into effect today in Mokokchung.
All commercial vehicles including local and regional taxis, private buses, commercial trucks, pickup trucks and night bus services remained off road. MDCVOA imposed the ‘chakha bandh’ in protest against the authorities not meeting its demand on revoking of VAHAN 4 in Mokokchung. Volunteers of MDCVOA were seen manning strategic locations in Mokokchung town today to impose the bandh.
Although there was no sign of shortage of essential commodities in the market today, all the fuel filling stations in Mokokchung town were reported to have gone almost out of stock in their reservoirs. The MDCVOA leaders informed that similar bandh was imposed today in Tuensang and Longleng and that the rest of the districts were also contemplating on imposing similar bandh.
Sources informed that the district administration has formulated a “mechanism and strategy” to ensure that there is no shortage of essential commodities and fuel in the market. It was also learned that efforts were being made to assuage the aggrieved party.
Meanwhile, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has informed that “there is enough stock of essential commodities in the market that should sustain at least two weeks under normal conditions.”
However, MCCI has requested the public not to resort to panic shopping or hoarding. “Traders are also directed not to indulge in any unethical and illegal market practices taking undue advantage of the situation like hiking prices of essential commodities,” MCCI said in a statement, adding that any trader found indulging in such practices shall be dealt with severely.
MCCI also requested the MDCVOA and the government to “find a solution at the earliest so that normal life in the district is not hampered.”
