Chele- a female singing group from Kohima performed for a global audience at the 23rd Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Congress 2025 in Brisbane, Australia that was recently held from July 7-12, 2025.
The group performed on three occassions from July 10-12 including the closing service of the BWA Congress on July 12. This also marks the group’s first international performance since the four music moms including Velulu Mero, Akhrou Koza Veswuh, Ruth Nukhu Sasü and Alhile Epao came together to form Chele meaning ‘Psalm’ in the Chakhesang dialect.
Creating ‘Heartsongs’ that are not just melodies but a reflection of who they were and a reminder of how far they have come, Chele had made its debut earlier this year on April 6 at The King Chilli Dimapur. The Group subsequently performed for a packed audience at the De Oriental Grand Kohima on May 18, celebrating the joy, resilience and story of the four female musicians under the theme, “This is my Song. This is my Story”.
Speaking of their experience at the Baptist World Alliance Congress in Brisbane, Australia, members of Chele shared that, “the highlight for us was getting the opportunity to listen to some of the top Baptist leaders of the world” while expressing that, “they were all spirit-filled.”
Voicing that they also felt so blessed for the opportunity to just worship and sing together with people from all corners of the world, the members added that, “It was a heartfelt moment we will always remember. From the worship sessions to the powerful teachings, every moment reminded us of God’s presence, His calling and grace upon our lives.”
They also recalled that their journey was eventful beginning from home with the landslides and flooding, but however expressed that, “we are grateful to God for pulling us through.”
“Through it all, we learned that sometimes the journey is part of the message. The resistance only made the breakthrough more powerful”, they underscored.
Expressing their profound gratitude to God “for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”, Chele also said they were grateful for all the support they received from friends back home.
