Chief Information Commissioner calls for people’s participation

KOHIMA, SEPT 18 (DIPR): During an interactive session with Media persons today, at the Zonal Council Hall, the Chief Information Commissioner, P. Talitemjen said that people’s participation is required to support the policies of the Government, so that the Government machinery runs smoothly. “Both Government and citizens have a role to play in order to make RTI Act a success”, he said.

The CIC said that Right of the citizens is the first word in the Act. However, to avoid misuse of the Act, the Government has certain rules and regulations to harmonize relationship between the public and Government.

He also said that as the RTI Act is new for the public, people are not well informed of the system and informed that he is planning for video conferencing with the Deputy Commissioners and Public Information Officers, besides a tour to various districts for creating awareness of the rules, regulations etc of the Act. 

Nagaland, along with the rest of the country, started implementing RTI Act from October 12th 2005. The CIC informed that the Central Information Commission will be organizing the 1st anniversary of RTI from 13th – 15th October 2006 in Delhi, where he will also be attending.

State Information Commissioner Rev. Dr. Pongsing, who also participated in the interaction, said that RTI has global connections and for which the level of transparency in the West, both in the Government and society is commendable. He was of the view that in Nagaland also, if the Government and civil societies contribute to reform and transform our community, there will certainly be positive changes.

State Information Commissioner, K.K. Zhimomi was also present. A large number of media persons were present at the interaction.
