Children and Women’s Right: Our Responsibilities

NACWR Peren Chapter with PDLSA conducts legal awareness programme

Peren, September 20 (MExN): Nagaland Alliance for Children and Women's Right (NACWR), Peren Chapter organized a legal awareness  programme in collaboration with Peren District Legal Service Authority (PDLSA) on  September 17 and 18, at Tepun Village, Tening Block,  Peren  District with its theme- ‘Children and Women’s Right: Our Responsibilities.’  

The resource persons were Somet Chang, Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, Liangsi Niumai, Advocate, Coordinator of NACWR, Peren Chapter, Asungbe N Hau, Panel Lawyer and Asuni.  

The Judicial Magistrate, Somet Chang, explained in detailed the NALSA Scheme of 2015, for trafficking and exploitation. She encouraged the community particularly the women to know about their Rights and also assured her assistance to the deserved victims. She informed that every women victim has the right to compensation which is awarded by the court through proper proceedings. She cited section 46(4)2 of CrPC that women  should be aware of their rights that no police can  arrest any women after sunset and before sunrise without seeking special permission or order from the Magistrate.  

Liangsi Niumai apprised the community saying, “Even today the Liangmai Community, women and children are deprived from our basic needs, such as education, good roads, basic health facilities, etc which is the result of deprivation of women's right and Children's Right more than fifty years ago.”  

She said, “In the present society we are going through  many crises such as- lack of  leadership quality,  lack of confidence, lack of intelligence, lack of courage, high illiteracy rate, negative influences in the society are some of the negative impacts caused due to  negligence and violation of  women's right  and Children's Rights.”  

While encouraging the people to wake up from their slumber and start respecting women's right and be responsible parents towards the children, Niumai said, “Government is responsible to assist families in fulfilling their essential role but it does not take away the parents responsibility away from the children. If basic facilities are not reaching to the deserved they should voice out in the right forum for effective implementation.”  

Asungbe, Panel Lawyer informed the participants the importance of creating child friendly environment for healthy growth of children. He also encouraged the parents and leaders to protect children's right and to come forward and avail facilities provided through Legal Service Authority. He cited some unfortunate incidents due to ignorance of right and negligence of children's right.  

Another panel lawyer Asuni explained special laws for protection of Women hood, marital rights and other constitutional rights and legal provisions for women.  

The participants resolved to change their attitudes towards children and women and agreed to respect the dignity of women. “Most important decision that took place during the interaction session was no children will be neglected and they will take proper care of their children's education and basic rights,” informed a press release. They assured the team that they will stop keeping their children in other places for domestic helper. NACWR Peren Chapter has given assurance to the community that the team will visit the village again after one year for monitoring and assessment.
