‘Children should not be categorized’

Dimapur, August 14: A teachers’ orientation programme was today held at St. Thomas Montessori School, Nagagaon with counselor Noel Manuel as the resource person.

Dwelling on the relationship between the student, parent and teacher, Noel said that the onus of education was significant to the role that each of these institutions played in human development. “The three ‘s’ in each of these institutions need to be functional for the achievement of long term results and objectives.” Parents have to extend their ‘support,’ students need to ‘sow’ the seeds of labour and teachers have to be ‘sensitive’ to the child’s needs.

Noel also deliberated on the five dimensions of the teacher, parent and student that help in the fertilizing and strengthening of the joints in this triangle of human development.

In the counseling session Noel suggested that students should not be categorized on the basis of poor, average and good. ‘It develops a stigma of negativity in the approach to various situations in life and children gradually begin to do only the things that they are good at.

Sri Kumar, the director of the school introduced the gathering to the teachers and also appreciated Noel Manuel for his wisdom and contributions made to the society.

Shobha, the school headmistress was also all praise for Noel and she opined that more such resource persons were needed to bring about a positive change in society.

A small prayer and refreshment was also offered at the start of the programme.
