An eight-day workshop on “Health perspective for impoverished populations,” organized by Community Health Initiative (CHI), Nagaland, and Institute of Global Health, University of Heidelberg (IGHUH), Germany commenced today here at Hotel Acacia, Dimapur.


The workshop sponsored by German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD), witnessed a host of resource persons and participants from countries including India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Tajikistan and Vietnam.


In the opening session, Dr Andreas Deckert, IGHUH, who spoke on the topic “Sustainable development goals and marginalized populations,” said as per the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of 2030,  agenda includes ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, making cities more sustainable, combating climate change and protecting oceans and forests.

 
Olivia Herlinda, Centre for Indonesia’s Strategic Development Initiatives, who spoke on “Access to health care: reaching the unreached” dwelled on geographical challenges, social and cultural barriers and double burden of diseases, said access means availability, accessibility and affordability.


Shoira Yusupova, World Health Organization, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and Jamila Nabieva, IGHUH, also presented their papers on “Forgotten on the roof of the world” and “Health inequalities and global perspective,” respectively.


Suboor Bakht, Heidelberg University representative to India, and Praveen Kumar, Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), New Delhi,  also highlighted on “Research: fields of focus” and exchange students’ programme.


Earlier, Dr Rhondemo Kikon, Community Health Initiative, Dimapur, who was also recently appointed as “Young Ambassador” of DAAD Germany, delivered the opening remarks.
