Chümoukedima prepares for disasters with Community First Responder training

Chümoukedima, June 19 (MExN): Can Youth in partnership with Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) held a preparatory meeting of Community First Responder (CFR) training with Ward Councilors of Chümoukedima Town Council (CTC) led by Chairperson Lhousito Khro and Representatives from Dhansiripar and Doyapur at Chümoukedima DC conference hall on June 18. 

During the meeting, Dr Kuzonyi Wideo, Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO, DDMA Chümoukedima introduced the objective of the preparatory meeting and importance of CFR training, stated a press release received here. 

Rendemo Shitio, Nodal Officer, DDMA Chümoukedima emphasised the critical role of Community First Responders (CFRs) during Disaster. He stated that even with limited personnel, effective action matters most. Highlighting the likelihood of increased disaster intensity over the next years, he stressed the need for resilient infrastructure and preparedness. 

He noted challenges such as narrow roads that hinder emergency access, underscoring the importance of CFRs in reaching affected areas quickly. He further stated that CFRs are essential not only in disasters but also in other emergencies, and urged the CTC Councilors to send Youth Volunteers under CTC to actively participate in upcoming CFR trainings and activities. He also highlighted the formation of the Ward Disaster Management Authority in Urban areas.

Jenpu Rhakho Rongmei, Founder and Chief Functionary, Can Youth highlighted the significance of Community First Responder (CFR) training during the session, focusing on both pre-training and post-training impacts. He shared that the first and second phases of the training were completed in Dimapur with the support of the Dimapur District Administration and Dimapur Municipal Council. 

He emphasised that CFR is not only about responding to disasters, but also about building unity and networking within communities during the crises. The training initiative is currently focused on two districts: Dimapur and Chümoukedima. 

Key areas of training include first aid, CPR, rescue operations, etc. Referring to a fire incident, Flood at Dimapur he stressed the importance of readiness and community response and the trainees, thematic roles which will be assigned, such as identification of fire rescue, first aid, community awareness, based on their strengths. He also encouraged greater participation of women, recognizing their key role in building community resilience. 

The preparatory meeting was chaired by Nuyelu Nyekha, Program Manager, Can Youth and Invoke God Blessing by Zhove Lohe, Secretary and Director, Can Youth.
