Chümoukedima, December 7 (MExN): The Hornbill Bamboo Carnival 2025 began at the Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre, Sovima, Chümoukedima, on December 7. The three-day event, organised by the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) as part of Hornbill Festival 2025, celebrates Nagaland’s growing bamboo sector.
Addressing the inaugural, NBDA Chairman Nuzota Swuro, as the Special Guest, highlighted the importance of integrating the Bamboo Carnival into the Festival reflected the State Government’s and agency’s vision to promote bamboo as ‘Green Gold’ and acknowledged pioneers and contributors who shaped NBDA since its establishment in 2005 under the Nagaland Bamboo Policy 2004.
Swuro outlined NBDA’s achievements, including bamboo plantations covering 45,621 hectares, 1,506 hectares of block plantations under the National Bamboo Mission, distribution of 24 lakh saplings, and expanded nursery propagation.
He also noted the development of a Bamboo Setum with 26 species, Rural Bamboo Haats, Bamboo Bazaars, community amenities, and several bamboo-based production units such as charcoal briquettes, agarbatti sticks, bamboo strips, venetian blinds, and structural treatments.
He further highlighted NBDA’s training initiatives for farmers, entrepreneurs, and artisans, including a recent design and value-addition workshop on World Bamboo Day 2025, and participation in domestic and international trade fairs to build market linkages.
Stating that the carnival aims to promote bamboo’s potential in crafts, construction, and creativity, Swuro encouraged participants to learn, collaborate, and support NBDA initiatives. He also announced plans to establish a Bamboo Research & Training Centre and strengthen market connections.
Er M Imkonglemba, NBDA Team Member, said the event celebrates bamboo-related crafts, arts, and artisans, while raising awareness about bamboo’s importance.
During the programme, Swuro launched a coffee table book, Celebrating 20 Years of Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency: Fostering a Sustainable Future, documenting NBDA’s journey from policy adoption in 2004 to its achievements in plantation, skill development, enterprise creation, and innovation.
The ceremony concluded with the formal launch of exhibition stalls, marking the start of the three-day carnival, which will continue till December 9, open to visitors from 2 pm to 9 pm daily, according to the State DIPR.
