Dimapur, January 22 (MExN): The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), in its attempt to free up elections in Nagaland from corrupt practices, has issued a statement through its Peace Committee that calls for all citizens of Nagaland to “vote for clean election” if change is desired.
Citing the root of the problems of the youth today cropping from corrupt election practices, the NBCC said “Election in Nagaland is seldom fought on the value-based, moral and ideological ground. The game here is all about money. Consequently, there is socio-economic, political and moral decadence and for which people are groaning. The corrupt practices of money politics make the rich richer and the poor poorer. This has adversely affected the social status of Naga society especially the youngsters whose minds are filled with negative attitude, anger, bitterness and frustration. This is a very dangerous social trend that needs urgent attention.”
Concerned with this trend, the NBCC has said it is launched its Clean Election Campaign on a ‘war footing’ so that people will carefully consider the consequences of their decision and action. Asking for people to change first by “changing the way you vote”, the Clean Election Campaign has asked two critical questions which each voter should ask to self: (1) Do you vote to seek immediate self-gratification by selling your vote and continue to suffer throughout the subsequent years? OR (2) To be selfless and far-sighted by exercising your vote rightly to usher in a positive change where you can rejoice and be proud of?
