CIH facilitates proper management practices of horticulture nurseries

Medziphema, August 17 (MExN): Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), DAC&FW, Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, Medziphema, in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Medi-Caps University, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, conducted online training on “nursery management and production technology of selected horticulture crops” from August 10-14. 

The objective of the training programme was to develop the overall understanding on proper management practices of horticulture nurseries and its role in production of quality planting materials, it also aimed to provide latest production technologies of some horticultural crops and marketing tips to help growers increase their profits. 

It was well attended by faculty members and students from Medi-Caps University and nurserymen, entrepreneurs and horticulture officers from all north east states virtually making a total of around 90 participants per day, stated a CIH press note.

The inaugural programme commenced with the welcome address by Dr NK Patle, Deputy Commissioner, Horticulture, DAC & FW cum Director CIH, he welcomed all the invited guest and participants and urged them to avail maximum opportunity to learn from the experts, he also emphasized on the importance of nursery management for production of quality planting materials and also highlighted on the activities of CIH with special reference to accreditation of nursery by the institute. 

Dr SK Chaurey, HoD, Agriculture, Medi-Caps University, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, addressed the gathering with his special remarks followed by the concluding remark by Dr SD Upadhyaya, Dean of Agriculture, Medi-Caps University. He appreciated the initiative taken up by CIH for the collaborative programme organized for nurserymen, entrepreneurs and students alike and thus creating a platform where participants and experts can interact, learn and develop their knowledge and skills. Finally, the inauguration ended with the vote of thanks by the programme coordinator Nisha Nandle, Asst Prof Medi-Caps Institute of Science and Technology.

The online training programme included ten sessions in all. Each session was started with oral presentation from invited speakers from different fields of horticulture. The questionnaire and interaction session was also conducted after the end of each presentation. 

Technical officers from CIH viz., AK Singh, Horticulture Specialist, delivered a detailed lecture on Introduction, Classification, Layout & Physical Resources of Nursery, Arvind Singh, Technical Consultant, through his presentation provided vital information on establishment of infrastructures for nursery and flower nursery. Meribeni Shitiri Horticulture Specialist, in her presentation on Introduction to Vegetable Nursery, provided technical information for planning and management of vegetable nurseries and Mr. Prabin Das, Marketing Specialist, enlightening the participants through his informative lecture on “Marketing and Entrepreneurship”.

Invited resource persons were eminent scientist from the Division of Fruit and Horticultural Technology, Indian Agriculture Research Institute, Pusa New Delhi namely Prof. RM Sharma, Principle Scientist, Dr. Amit Goswami, Scientist and Dr SK Singh, Sr Principal scientist, engrossed the participants with their informative and enlightening on Nursery Management and Production technologies of Citrus, Guava and Mango respectively. Dr Venkatesh Hubbali, Director, Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development, Kochi, was also invited to present a lecture on production technologies and nursery management of cashew.

The training ended with a valedictory speech by Dr Moasosang Longkumer, AHS, CIH, and a concluding remark by the Director CIH in which he acknowledged the Dean and his entire team of Department of Agriculture, Medi-Caps University for their full dedication and cooperation. He also thanked all the participants for their active participation and inputs and encouraged them to continually participate in such events.
